Francis Harold Marshall was born in 1895 at Selston and was the son of John Henry an ironworks engine driver and Sarah Ann Marshall née Newton of Oakdene, Laverick Road, Jacksdale. His father John Henry was born in 1864 at Selston, his mother Sarah Ann Newton was born in 1864 at Kirkby in Ashfield, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, John George b1888 at Stapleford, Alfred Louis was born in 1889, Florence Mary b1892, Francis Harold b1895 and Gertrude Maud b1899 all were born in Selston. In the 1911 census the family were living at Dove Green, Selston and were shown as John Henry 47 yrs an ironworks engine driver, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 46 yrs and their children, Alfred Louis 22 yrs a colliery clerk, Florence Mary 19 yrs working at home, Francis Harold 16 yrs a butchers assistant and Gertrude Maud 12 yrs a scholar.
In the 1911 census he is a butchers assistant for Thomas Mycroft, Butchers of Lower Somercotes, Derbyshire

1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Francis Harold Marshall enlisted at Alfreton whilst residing at Jacksdale on 23rd May 1916. He served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th March 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
