He was the son of Henry and Agnes Mason and the brother of Elizabeth, Henry, Ivy, Harold and Edith Mason. In 1901 they lived at 366 St Ann's Well Road Nottingham. He was the husband of Ada (Freeman) Mason and in 1911 they lived at 48 Lewis Street Nottingham. He was the father of Albert, William, Alice and Henry Mason. Ada later moved to 'Albert Villas' Standhill Road Nottingham.
In 1911 he was a packer.

Gunner Ernest Sidney Mason, served with 378th Battery, 169th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 13th April 1918. He is buried in Namps-au-Val British Cemetery.Grave Reference: II C 13
Death notice published 2nd May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MASON. – Died of wounds, in hospital, April 12th, 1918, (sic) Gunner Ernest Sydney Mason, aged 31.
