Edward was born in 1878 in Retford and was the son of Edward a bricklayer and Ann Marsh, (nee Connors ) of The Pad, Moorgate, Retford. Edward and Ann had a large family of 11 children, however four of them had died before 1911. In the 1891 the family are living at Moorgate, Clarborough at this time Edward is 12 years of age and a scholar. By 1901 he has married his wife Grace Brett in Retford. In the 1901 census he and new wife Grace are living with his parents Edward and Ann at Moorgate,Retford he is now 22 years of age and a bricklayer like his father. Edward and Grace soon have children Joseph Edward born 1901, Edith Anne born 1902, Mary born 1904 and John born 1907. His father Edward died in 1910. By the 1911 census we find Edward aged 32 years a bricklayer and married on the census living with his brother and a cousin at 25 Marsh Gate, Doncaster also living with him are two more of his children daughters Marian born 1909 and Frances Clara who is just 3 months of age, there is no mention of his wife Grace.

2nd Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Edward enlisted in Worksop and served with the 2nd battalion Yorks and Lancaster regiment. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916 and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme.
He had a younger brother John who served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers who was killed very early in the war on 14th October 1914.
