John was born in 1882 at Darwen, Lancashire and was the son of Edward a bricklayer and Ann Marsh, (née Connors ) of The Pad, Moorgate, Retford. Edward and Ann had a large family of 11 children, however four of them had died before 1911. In the 1891 the family are living at Moorgate, Clarborough at this time John is 9 years of age. By 1901 he had joined the army.

2nd Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers
John enlisted at Retford on 9th October 1901 he was a labourer at the time and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish borderers he enlisted with Caward Campbell (6734), a friend from St Saviour's School, which they both attended. Campbell was killed on 13 October 1914 the day before John who was killed on 14th October 1914. Both men are commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.
He had three brothers who also served; Jim in the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters, and Charles in the Sherwood Rangers and Edward who served in the 2nd battalion Yorks and Lancaster regiment and who was killed in action on 15th September 1916.
