George Craddock

George Craddock was the son of William Edward Craddock and Mary Rebecca Bowley, who married in the Basford registration district in 1868. Among their children were: Mary Ann (b.1870), Lavinia (b.1871), Eliza (b.1873), Joseph (b.1875), William Edward (b.1878), Bertha (b.1880), Ellen (b.1882) and George (b.1884). All were born in Gotham, Notts. The addresses the Craddocks lived at included: Church Street, Gotham [C.1881], Bag Lane, Gotham [C.1891], 88 St Peter’s Street, Radford [C.1901]. William Edward Craddock, who worked as a plaster miner, died in the Basford registration district, aged 56, in 1896. His widow later married Joseph Spurrell at Nottingham in 1909 but died in 1912, aged 58. In 1909 George Craddock married Ruth Hollyhead at Nottingham. The couple had two daughters: Millicent (b.1910) and Marian (b.1912). At the time of the 1911 census the family were living at 143 Forster Street, Radford. This address continued to feature in all the surviving Army paperwork attached to George Craddock’s service records up to 1919. His widow never remarried and died at Nottingham, aged 58, in 1938.

George Craddock worked for John player & Sons in the tobacco spinning department.

Enlisted in Nottingham on 9th December 1915; placed in Army Reserve; mobilised and assigned rank of Gunner 7 June 1916; appointed acting bombardier 15 August 1916; reverted to Gunner at his own request 14 October 1916; embarked for Boulogne, France 10 February 1917; died of a gunshot wound to his back at the 4th Casualty Clearing Station; buried in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
