Thomas Northern was born in 1883 at Whittingham Moor, Chesterfield and was the son of John Henry Northern a coal miner and Elizabeth Tinsley Northern née Royal. Thomas married Florence Kate Nuell 15th November 1915 at St Marys Church, Kidderminster . She was from Kidderminster and returned there after the war to live at 27, York Street. When Thomas was discharged from the army in April 1914, his address was 190 Warsop Vale, Mansfield. His brother Sandy lived at this address in 1911 so perhaps he helped Thomas get a job at the local colliery when he left the army. Following his death his widow Florence Kate was awarded a pension of 11 shillings and 2 pence a week which commenced on 12th February 1917.
He was a coal miner.

1st Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps
Sergeant Thomas Northern enlisted 1st June 1905 he was aged 22 years and 5 months, he was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and arrived at their barracks at Winchester on 5th June 19105. He had served in India and was transferred to the reserves on 4th April 1914 however he was recalled once war was declared. He was promoted to corporal on 30th June 1915 and to sergeant on 03rd October 1915. He was killed in action on 27th July 1916 and is buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Grave Reference: IX G 9
