Arthur Clifford was born in 1896 at New Basford and was the son of John George a colliery labourer and Annie Clifford née Whitehead of 5 Shipstone Street, Basford. His father John George was born in 1864 at Ileston, his mother Annie Whitehead was born in 1863 at Wollaton, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Annie Sarah b1887, Daisy b1891, Arthur b1896, John George b1889 and Isabel Florence b1904 all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family lived at 5 Shipstone Street Basford Nottingham and were shown as John George 47 yrs a colliery labourer above ground, he is living with his wife Annie 48 yrs and their children, Annie Sarah 24 yrs a machinist, Arthur 15 yrs a hosiery trimmers assistant, John George 12 yrs a scholar and Isabel 7 yrs a scholar. Also living with them was their grandson Samuel Clifford 4 yrs of age.
In 1911 he was a hosiery trimmer's assistant.

24th Bn London Regiment
Private Arthur Clifford enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Basford, he initially served with the service number 4653 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and later transferred to the 24th battalion London Regiment. He was killed in action on 14th October 1918 and is buried at Aubers Ridge British Cemetery Grave Reference: VI F 16
