He was the son of Thomas and Charlotte Shortland and the brother of Mary and Flora (later Culley) Shortland. In 1901 they lived at 39 Kirkwhite Street Meadows Nottingham. Flora later lived at 123 Hood Street Sherwood Nottingham.
In 1911 he was serving at Gough Barracks Trimulgherry Deccan India with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters.
