Rowland Arthur Walters was born in 1895 the son of Joseph a colliery deputy and Mary Walters née Beresford and the brother of Percy, Ethel, Lilian, Harry and Cyril Walters of 68 High Pavement Sutton in Ashfield. Joseph was born in 1864 at Heage, Derbyshire, Mary Beresford was born in 1862 at Derby, they were married on 5th July 1884 at the Parish church at Ripley, they went on to have 9 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 20 Regent Street Sutton in Ashfield, Joseph is 47 yrs and a colliery deputy, he is living with his wife Mary 49 yrs and their 6 children, Rowland is 14 yrs and a pony driver at a coal mine.

Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Private Rowland Arthur Walters enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he initially served with the service number 23278 in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was serving with the 3rd battalion Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action. He is buried at Douchy-Les-Ayette, British Cemetery, France.
