Rifleman George Henry Walker enlisted at Newark , he initially served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps with service number 16820. He was serving with the 9th battalion Rifle Brigade when he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 23rd June 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Mrs Walker, 2 Tolney Lane, Newark. Enlisted about 18 months ago and after three months training was drafted to France, where he has been ever since. Prior to the war he worked as a platelayer on the Midland Railway and was a member of the Newark South End Football Club. Killed in action. His mother has three young children dependent on her, she having lost her husband twelve months ago from pneumonia.
