William Cooling was born in 1896 at Southwell and was the son of Edwin a bricklayers labourer and Ellen Cooling née Scraton of 17 Village Street North Leverton and later 3 Lucas Yard Pleasley. His father Edwin was born in 1865 at Southwell and his mother Ellen Scraton was born in 1865 also at Southwell, they were married in 1889 at Southwell, they went on to have 11 children, sadly three were to died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Mabel b1891 Southwell, Lillian b1892 Romley, Lincolnshire, Harold b1894 Southwell, William b1896 Southwell, Elsie b1898 Southwell, Arthur b1901 Gamston, Robert b1904 Clipstone and Hilda Cooling b1906 Farnsfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Lucas Yard, Pleasley and are shown as Edwin 46 yrs a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 46 yrs and their children, Harold 17 yrs a cotton spinner, William 15 yrs a cotton spinner, Elsie 13 yrs a scholar, Arthur 10 yrs a scholar, Robert 7 yrs a scholar and Hilda 5 yrs
He was a cotton spinner.

2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private William Cooling enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at New Houghton he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 29th August 1915 and died of wounds on 5th July 1917 and is buried at Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
