William Gregory was born in 1890 at Bagthorpe and was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Mary Gregory, Of Bromley House, Lynn Croft, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. His father Samuel was born in 1868 at Selston and his mother Mary was born in 1869 at Brinsley, they were married in 1889 and went on to have the following children, William b1890, John Frank b1891, Samuel Arthur b1892, Helena May b1895, Samuel Reuben b1899, Doris Alice b1905, Maggie Irene b1906 and Florence Winifred b1909, all were born at Selston. In the 1911 census the family are living at Church Lane, Bagthorpe and are shown as Samuel 43 yrs a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Mary 42 yrs and their children, William 21 yrs a drapers assistant, John Frank 20 yrs a coal miner loader, Samuel Arthur 19 yrs a coal miner loader, Helena May 16 yrs no occupation listed, Samuel Reuben 12 yrs a scholar, Doris Alice 6 yrs, Maggie Irene 5 yrs and Florence Winifred 2 yrs. They state they have been married for 22 yrs and have had 8 children.
Prior to enlistment he was the manager of the drapery dept of Codnor Park Co-operative Society.

169th Siege Bty Royal Garrison Artillery
Sergeant William Gregory enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served with the 169th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery . He was killed in action on 3rd September 1917 and is buried at Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension. grave reference IV.F.3
