Samuel Baldwin enlisted at Newark and was killed in action on 5 July 1916 near La Boiselle, Somme. The battalion was tasked with consolidated the line and clearing any enemy from No Man's Land. Three columns consisting of one company, bombers and Lewis Gunners moved forward clearing as they went before consolidating the line. The centre company managed to get to the objective but after fierce fighting were forced back. The company fought at close quarters for hours but could not make headway. Finally after many hours of fighting, the battalion had hardly moved. During this attack Samuel was killed and he has no known grave. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A. Research John Morse
