Born in 1881 the son of John a coal miner hewer and Martha Ann Starbuck née Litchfield and the brother of Elizabeth, William, Edna, James and Walter Starbuck. In 1901 they lived on Cow Lane Bramcote Nottinghhamshire. John married his wife Clara Francis (born 31st July 1885 ) in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they lived at 51 Lot Street, Stapleford. they had the following children John Cyril born 26th June 1909, Joseph Arthur born 8th June 1911, William Ernest born 16th February 1914 and Walter born 4th December 1915. In the 1911 census they were lodging at 11 Chapel Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. Following his death his widow Clara was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week commencing 8th July 1918. Clara married Henry Dixey in 1918.

South Nottinghamshire Hussars
Private John Starbuck enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1/1st battalion South Nottinghamshire Hussars, he landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and died of pericarditis on 23rd December 1917. He was buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt grave reference C137.
