Charles Orme

Charles was born in 1884 at Chesterfield and was the son of Mrs T Orme of Nottingham. In the 1911 census Charles is in the Army, he is shown as being 27 yrs of age and a Private Soldier living in Barracks in India and is serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Charles married his wife Florence Godber in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 9 Gawthorne Terrace, New Basford, they went on to have a daughter Florence May born 20th May 1913. They also lived at 168 Burford Road Hyson Green Nottingham. Following his death his widow Florence was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 11th November 1918.

Corporal Charles Orme, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 22nd April 1918. He is buried in Aveluy Wood Cemetery, (Lancashire Dump), Mesnil-Martinsart, grave reference 2.H.1 A pre-war Regular, he had been wounded twice previously, on 20th October 1914 and 5th June 1915.

Article published 1st July 1915 in the Nottingham Daily Express :- “TWICE WOUNDED. “Sherwood who has Seen Nine Months of War. “Private C. Orme, of the 2nd Sherwood Foresters, whose home is at 168, Burford-road, Hyson Green, Nottingham. He went to France early last September, and was wounded at La Bassee on October 20th. After three weeks in hospital in France he rejoined his regiment, and was in action many times until he was severely wounded on June 5th, this time severely, and was invalided home to England.” Death notices published 10th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ORME. – Killed in action, April 22nd, 1918, Cpl. Charles Orme, aged 33, the beloved husband of Florence Orme (née Godber), 9, Gawthorne-terrace. Sacrificed him for his country. – From his sorrowing wife and little daughter. “ORME. – Killed in action, April 22nd, 1918, Cpl. Charles Orme, Sherwood Foresters, aged 33.
