Walter Lawrence was born in 1893 at Ely and was the son of Abraham a general labourer and Anna Lawrence née Cross of Adelaide Bridge near Ely. His father Abraham Lawrence was born in 1849 at Ely and his mother Hannah Lee Cross was born in 1852 at Adelaide Bridge, they were married in 1875 at Ely, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Nathan b1875 , Henry b1878, George 1882, William b1884, Jane b1888, Ethel b1890, Walter b1893, Anna b1896 and Emily b1901, all were born in the Ely and Adelaide Bridge In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Adelaide Bridge near Ely and are shown as Abraham 62 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Hannah 59 yrs and their children Anna 16 yrs and Emily 9 yrs. In the same 1911 census Walter has left the family home and is living at 38 Lombard Street, Newark, he is living with William Dunwoody 41 yrs a doctor of medicine and his family and is shown as 19 yrs single and a servant, a groom gardener Walter married his wife Mary Elizabeth Selby in 1915 in Newark and they lived at 42, Hatton Gardens, Newark
He was a groom/gardener in the 1911 census.

Private Walter Lawrence served with the 612th Motor Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps. He died on 13th February 1919 and is buried at Newark Cemetery.
