Charles Calladine

He was the son of Thomas and Maria Calladine and the brother of Bertie, Louie, Edith, Janet Julia, Thomas Frederick, George and Ernest Joseph Calladine. The family lived at 4 Lamcote Grove and later 90 Woolmer Road (both Meadows Nottingham). . Charles Calladine married Millicent Calladine, née Buxton at the Register Office, Nottingham on 06/08/1914. They had one son, Charles, born on 18/06/1915.

Charles worked as a warehouseman and then as a coal miner.

The 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters was moved in May 1918 to the Chemin des Dames Ridge for rest after the heavy fighting of March and April. Unfortunately they were, along with five British divisions, moving to the location where the next German offensive was to be launched. On May 26 they learned that the attack was to be launched the next day. There was a huge artillery bombardment and then the Germans attacked in dense numbers. The battalion was forced back but then was almost wiped out. By May 30, 1918 it had suffered 680 casualties, dead or missing. Charles Calladine was amongst the killed in action. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Soissons Memorial.
