Arthur was born in 1891 in East Leake and was the son of Herbert a basket maker and Elizabeth Hallam. Herbert and Elizabeth had nine children , however one sadly died in infancy their surviving children were , Annie, Arthur, Edith Mary, Maud Elizabeth, Lucy, Beatrice Mary, Sarah Ann and Herbert. In the 1911 census the whole family are living at West Street, East Leake , Arthur is 20 years of age and is following in his fathers occupation of basket making. On 5th may 1912 , Arthur married Zilla Pepper in East Leake, they went on to have two children, Thomas Arthur born 1913 and Gladys born 1915. Following Arthurs death in 1916 , Zilla went on to marry again twice, first time in 1937 to Leslie Pepper and finally in 1953 to Leonard Ellis.

2nd Bn Lancashire Fusiliers
Arthur enlisted in Ilkeston and at first served in the North Staffordshire regiment with the service number 4481 , he later transferred and served with the 2nd battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 12th October 1916, his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
