He was the son of William (1858-1933) and Ginnie [Mary J] (1886-1914) Thornhill of Beeston, Nottingham, and the husband of Harriet Thornhill of 1 Edith Terrace, Garfield Road, Radford Nottingham (CWGC). Siblings William, George, Leonard and Elizabeth (1891 census: Shepstone Cottages, William St, Beeston.). At the time he enlisted in 1904 he lived with his parents at Roseland View, Radford. He married Harriet McGrath, spinster, in Nottingham Register Office on 13 August 1909. In 1911 they were living at 6 Cardwell Street, Hyson Green. Children Stanley (11/1/1910), Arthur (31/3/1912) and Bernard (11/5/1914, died same year, J/A/S). Harriet awarded widow's pension March 1917 of 19/- a week for herself and two children (Stanley and Arthur) from 19/3/1917. She married Alfred E Hudson (O/N/D/1922) and died J/A/S/1939 aged 53.
At the time of the 1901 census he was a hosiery machinist/fitter but a barman on enlistment in 1904. In 1911 he was a barman (public house).

He served with 'C' Bty, 70th Bde RFA. Army Service Record survives. Enlisted on a Short Service Engagement in May 1904 when age 18y 8m. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 8 May 1907 on completion of engagement. Mobilized and to France. Killed in action (gas). Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery (grave ref II.A.13)
