Father: George Graves, born in 1872 at Shardlow, Derbyshire and working as a railway porter. Mother: Mary Elizabeth Graves, born in 1872 at Basford, Nottingham. Brother: Clarence Henry, born in 1903. Sisters: Clara, born in 1899 and Gertrude Daisy, born in 1910. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 103 Woolmer Road, Nottingham before moving to 107 Batley Street, Meadows, Nottingham.

7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Graves was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. Though a member of 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was attached to 178th Brigade Headquarters in 1918. It was there that he was involved in the fighting after the Germans launched their spring offensive, Operation Michael. He was reported missing on 21/03/1918 and his death was not confirmed until May 1919. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Arras memorial.
