Joseph William Bird was born in 1887 the son of James a coal miner hewer and Julia Bird née Worthington of New St., Kirkby-in-Ashfield. James was born in 1860 at Newbold, Julia Worthington was born in 1862 in Leicester, married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Julia brought 3 children to the marriage, John George Worthington, Arthur Henry Worthington and James Edward Worthington, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Golden Street, Kirkby in Ashfield

6th Bn The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)
Private Joseph William Bird, enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Asken, he served with the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He landed at Gallipoli on 8th September 1915 and died of wounds at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford on 14th October 1916. He is buried in Kingsway Cemetery, Kirkby-in-Ashfield,
