John William Culley was born in 1895 he was the son of John Henry a coach fitter and Emily Culley née Whitby Beardsley and the brother of Leslie Culley and Doris of 1 Rowland Avenue, Mapperley, Nottingham. John Henry was born in 1868 at Nottingham, Emily Whitby Beardsley was born in 1870 at Derby they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 26 Woolpack Lane, Nottingham, and later at 26 Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham John Henry 43 yrs is a coach fitter he is living with his wife Emily 41 yrs and 2 of their children, John William 16 yrs a warehouse office boy and Lewis 4 yrs.
He was educated Mundella School Meadows Nottingham. In 1911 he was a warehouse office boy.

10th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
Private John William Culley enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 17478 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Later transferring to the 10th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the fist day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916, he is buried at Ovillers Military Cemetery (Grave Reference: IV.D.2)
