Thomas Henry Cowling, the youngest son of James and Hannah Cowling (nee Cragg), was born in Misterton, Nottinghamshire in 1896. He was a farm worker. He had spent most of his life at Misterton but prior to the war, found him resident at Hodsock, probably employed on the Blyth Hall estates. His parents were living at Rayton Angles Worksop at the time of his death

Thomas Henry Cowling was killed in action on 23/9/1916 , his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial,Somme. Whilst the battalion were located in Constance Trench near Thiepval, Somme. The battalion should have been relieved on 20th September but this order was cancelled, therefore they still held the front line on 23rd September when Thomas was killed, being relieved the following day. Constance Trench was under constant enemy artillery fire and seriously degraded by heavy rain. John Morse
