He was the son of John and Alice Clay and the brother of Ernest, Mary Ann, Bruce, Arthur and Thomas Clay. In 1911 they lived at Buckfield House Kimberley Nottinghamshire.
In 1911 he was a shop assistant.

He was killed at Langemark and is buried in Beleuet Farm Cemetery (grave ref l/E/43).
The family memorial is on the south wall of the nave in Holy Trinity church (WMA26883). Inscription: 'Sacred to the memory of Lance-Corpl Fredk Shaw Clay, Coldstream Guards, who was killed at Langemark, Sept 24th 1917, aged 20 years. Peace, perfect peace.'
