William Leslie Gray was born in 1898 at Hucknall and was baptised on 20th September 1898 and was the eldest son of Charles Wesley a colliery manager and Harriet Gray, née Machin of Sherwood House Linby Nottinghamshire. His father Charles Wesley Gray was born 1870 in Swannington, Leicestershire and his mother Harriet Machin was born in 1870 at Linby, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Great Ouseburn, Yorkshire, registration district, they went on to have the following children, William Leslie b1898 Hucknall, Evelyn Mary b1903 Hucknall and John Machin b1904 Linby. His mother Harriet Grey died on 19th December 1904 aged 35 yrs, the death was registered in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census the family are living at Linby and are shown as Charles Gray a widow 41 yrs a commercial traveller, he is living with his children, William Leslie 12 yrs , Evelyn Mary 8 yrs and John Machin 7 yrs , the family employee two servants, Sarah Sabin 41 yrs a nurse and Elizabeth Challis 31 yrs a domestic servant The Gray family generously supported Belgian refugees in the area. Williams grandfather Thomas Gray was the managing director of Linby Colliery. Following William's death his probate was proven on 26th August 1919 in Nottingham, it shows him as William Leslie Gray, Sherwood House, Linby Second Lieutenant in HM Army died 28th September 1918 in France, he effects of £295. 2 shillings and 9 pence were left to Charles Wesley Gray, colliery Manager his father.

Second Lieutenant William Leslie Gray served with the 4th battalion Suffolk Regiment he was mortally wounded 27/9/1918 near Flesquieres and was buried 28/9/1918 at Grevillers British Cemetery.
His mothers probate was proven on 12th May 1908 at Nottingham and shows her as Harriet Grey wife of Charles Wesley Gray ,died 19th December 1904, her effects of £4,300 were left to the said Charles Wesley Grey, colliery manager and Richard Machin and Henry Machin farmers. His fathers probate was proven on 22nd March 1952 at Nottingham and shows him as Charles Wesley Gray, Sherwood House Linby, died 9thNovember 1951, his effects of £70.580. 3 shillings and 5 pene were left Evelyn Mary spinster and Frank Pagnell a chartered accountant.
