Sydney was born in Retford in 1895 We first come across him when he is 6 years of age , he is living at 82 Albert Road with his uncle Harry Hunt 26 years of age and a millwright, also at the address is his aunt Cecilia Hunt (sister to Harry ). We next find him in the 1911 census , this time he is 16 years of age and living at 90 Hatton Gardens, Newark. he is working as an apprentice engineers pattern maker and is living with his uncle Frank Mather and his wife Cecilia Mather (nee Hunt) Frank is an engineers pattern maker.

Sydney enlisted at Newark and stated he had been born in Retford , he served as a wheeler in ""T"" Bty. 13th Bde., Royal Horse Artillery. he was killed in action on 17th December 1916 and is buried Mailly Wood Cemetery, Somme, France. 2.D.13at
