Mountana Johnson was born in 1896 at Denton, Lincolnshire and was the son of Harry a van man and Agnes Johnson née Ray of 48 Warburton Street Newark. His father Harry Johnson was born in 1873 at Denton, Lincolnshire his mother Agnes Martha Ray was born in 1874 Holesworth, Huntingdon, they were married in 1892 , their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration district they went on to have 3 children, all of whom were born at Denton, Aubrey b1893, Mountana b1896 and Marjorie b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at Denton, Grantham and are shown as Harry 38 yrs a van man, he is living with his wife Agnes 37 yrs and their children, Aubrey 18 yrs a joiners apprentice, Mountana 15 yrs a joiners apprentice and Marjorie 2 yrs of age.

Private Mountana Johnson enlisted on 9th December 1914 at Newark., giving his age as 19 yrs and 6 months and his address as 48 Warburton Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father was Harry of the same address. He was posted to 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 arriving at Rouen, France on 29th June 1915. He was killed in action on 26th June 1916 and is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 12th July 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Harry & Agnes Johnson, 48 Warburton Street, Newark. Worked as a motor mechanic at Grantham, but returned to Newark to join the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters. Trained at Luton, he had spent 12 months in the trenches and had taken part in most of the battalion’s engagements including the Hohenzollern redoubt. Killed by a piece of shell through the heart.
