Herbert Peet was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of James a railway porter and Alice Peet née Lane they lived at 3 Cliff Nook Lane Newark. His father was born in 1850 at Newark and his mother Alice Lane was born in 1853 at Kirkby Le Thorpe, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1873 at Sleaford and went on to have the following children, Harry b1874, Arthur 1877, Walter 1879, Florence b1882, Albert b1884, James 1887, Lewis b1890 and Herbert b1892 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Hatton Terrace, Newark and were shown as James 61 yrs a railway porter he is living with his wife Alice 58 yrs and their children Florence 28 yrs a tailoress and Herbert 19 yrs an apprentice iron turner.
He was an apprentice iron turner in 1911.

1/5th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Herbert Peet enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he was killed in action on 30th August 1918 and is buried at Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
He was born J/A/S/1891 so may have been 27 when killed. Article published 18th September 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Youngest son of James & Alice Peet of Cliff Nook Lane, Newark. Worked as a fitter at Messrs. Nicholsons before joining the Sherwoods in October 1914. In course of time he was sent to France, but later invalided home and not again sent out until his 26th birthday, 26th June 1918. Killed by a machine-gun whilst out on patrol preparatory to his platoon advancing. His two brothers are serving, Sgt. Albert Peet, in France and Sgt. Arthur Peet, in the motor transport at Chatham.
