Campbell junior was born in Retford in 1884 and was the son of Campbell Charles a roofer in the building trade and Elizabeth Caward his second wife , Campbell senior had been previously been married to Susannah. In the 1911 census he is living at Bethal Yard, Moorgate, Retford he is 26 years of age and single and he is following his fathers trade of slater in the building trade, he is living with his widowed father Campbell Charles (senior)

King's Own Scottish Borderers
He enlisted at Retford on 9th October 1901 and gave his occupation as that of slater , his next of kin being his father Campbell Charles,He served with the 2nd battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, he saw service in India, Ireland Egypt and Africa. He was recalled to the colours at the outbreak of war, his medal index cards show his qualifying date was 5th August 1914 and was one of the first of the British Expeditionary Force to go to France. He was killed in action on 13th October 1914 and his name is commemorated n the Le Touret Memorial, Pas-De-Calais, France
