George Richardson

George was born in 1894 in Calverton, the son of Frederick Arthur and Kate Richardson née Staples. His father Frederick Arthur was born in 1866 at Arnold and his mother Kate Staples was born in 1870 at Edingley, Nottinghamshire. They were married in 1890 (Basford Registration district) and had the following children, Edith b1892 Calverton, George b1894 Calverton, Hannah b1899 Arnold, Henry b1903 Arnold and Ann b1907 Arnold. In the 1911 census the family was living at Watchwood Cottage, Arnold and shown as Frederick Arthur Richardson 45 yrs, a farm waggoner, his wife Kate 41 yrs and their children Hannah 12 yrs a scholar, Henry 8 yrs a scholar and Ann 4 yrs. George had left the family home by 1911 and was living at Home Farm, Bestwood Park, Arnold, with Alfred Jackson 40 yrs, farmer, and his family. George was an assistant cowman on the farm; he was 17 yrs and single.

In the 1911 census he was employed as assistant cowman on Home Farm, Bestwood Park, Arnold Nottingham.

Pte. George Richardson enlisted in Newark on 21st May 1913. He gave his age as 18 yrs and 10 months, occupation labourer and address as 42 Wright Street, Newark. His next of kin was his father Frederick of Watchwood Cottage, Arnold, Notts. He served with 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He died of wounds on 16th June 1915 and was buried in Loker Churchyard, Heuvelland, Belgium. CWGC: 'Locre (now Loker) was in Allied hands during the greater part of the war, and field ambulances were stationed in the Convent of St. Antoine ... Loker Churchyard was used by field ambulances and fighting units from December 1914 to June 1917, and it contains two Commonwealth plots.'
