Elijah was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of Walter a bricklayer and Mary Salmon née Morris of 6 Cawkwell's Yard, Lombard Street, Newark. His father Walter was born in Cuckney in 1857 and his mother Mary Morris was born in 1854 at Warsop, they were married and went on to have 16 children sadly 8 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, John R b1878 , William b1880, Edward b1882, Walter Frederick b1883, Charles b1887, Elizabeth b1889, Alice b1891, Beatrice b1895, Elijah b1897 and Albert b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at Albion Street, Newark and are shown as Walter 54 yrs a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Mary 57 yrs and their children, Edward 28 yrs a labourer and Elijah 14 yrs an errand boy.

2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Elijah Salmon enlisted at Newark and served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action on 21st March 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Has three brothers who also served during the 'Great War ' Cpl Edward Salmon (the eldest, Loyal North Lancs.), Pte Walter Salmon (Lincs), both served in South African War. Also, Pte Charles Salmon (Lincs.)
