John Herbert Shardlow was born in 1890 the son of Arthur Edwin a butcher and Mary Annie Shardlow née Booth of 17 Main Street, South Normanton. Arthur Edwin was born in 1868 at Woodthorpe, Derbyshire, Mary Annie Booth was born in 1870 at Brampton, Derbyshire, married in 1889 their marriage was registered in the Chesterfield registration district. they went on have 5 children. In 1911 John Herbert has left the family home, we find him living at Sherwood Street, Huthwaite, he is shown as being 20 yrs of age single and a coal miner, also living at the address is his future wife, Rose Eleanor Layton also shown as being 19 yrs single and a cotton worker. John Herbert married Rose Eleanor Layton, they were married in 1911 their marriage was registered in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 6 High Street, Sutton in Ashfield and had 3 children, Rose Eleanor born 26th December 1911, Ethel May born 6th May 1913 and John Herbert born 10th March 1913. His widow later married Thomas Cooper in 1919 at Mansfield.

8th Bn South Staffordshire Regiment
Lance Corporal John Herbert Shardlow enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield he initially served with the service number 23147 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. His first entry in the war was on 1st October 1915 in the Balkans. He was killed in action on 5th November 1916 whilst serving with the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment and is buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery, France.
