Wilfred Simpson

Wilfred Simpson was born in 1895 the son of James a coal miner hewer and Eliza Ann Simpson née Jephson of 23, Aswell St., Netherfield, Nottingham. James was born in 1866 at Blackheath, Stafford Eliza Ann Jephson was born in 1866 at Sutton in Ashfield, married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district. 1911 census the family are living at 26 Willow Road Carlton Nottingham James Francis Simpson, head, 45; Eliza Ann, wife, 45; Albert William, son, 17; Wilfred, son, 16; Clement Frank, son, 14; Eleanor Rebecca, dau, 8.

Private Wilfred Simpson enlisted on 9 December 1915 and out on army reserve. He was mobilized on 15 May 1917 and on 17th sent to 4th reserve battalion. On 8 August 1917 he was posted to 2nd battalion but this seems to have been a paper exercise as on 27 August 1917 he was posted to 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nott's and Derby Regiment). On 10th December 1917 the battalion moved into the front line in Lens, France. At 8.30 pm on 13th December the battalion was relieved by the 6th Lincoln's and it is probable that Wilfred was killed during this relief. He was the only man to die that day and is buried in Loos British Cemetery grave XX.E.8

Wilfred Simpson, Sherwood Foresters, dearly beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, Chandos-street, Netherfield. Deeply mourned. He is not dead, but sleepeth. – Sorrowing mother, father, brothers, and sister. “SIMPSON. – Killed in action, December 12th, Wilfred Simpson, Sherwood Foresters. One of the best. – Sadly missed by Jenny and all at 10 Conway-road.” In memoriam published 12th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SIMPSON. – In loving memory of Wilfred, dearly beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, Chandos-street, Netherfield, killed in action December 12th, 1917.
