Frank Handley Smith was born in 1889 at Newark and was the son of the late George a maltster and Mary Emma Smith née Corby of 45 North Gate Newark. His father George was born in 1845 at Newark and his mother Mary Emma Corby was born in 1846 also at Newark, they were married in 1869 at Newark and went on to have the following children, William b1870, Emma b1881, Arthur b182, Charles b1884, Florence b1886, Frank Handley b1889. In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Northgate, Newark and are shown as Mary Emma Smith 65 yrs a widow, she is living with her children Charles 27 yrs a sack repairer at maltsters and Frank Handley 22 yrs a maltsters chemist. Frank Handley married his wife Eleanor Waywood Asling (b1886) in 1913 at Newark. they lived at 57, Hatton Gardens, Newark.
He was a maltster chemist.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Sergeant Frank Handley Smith enlisted at Newark and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 23rd October 1917 and is buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, Nord, France.
