Fred Cyril Smith was the son of William Henry Smith and Mary Bostock who married at Nottingham in 1877. They had two children: Frank William (b.1879) and Fred Cyril (b.1886). The Smith family lived at: 3 Matlock Street, Nottingham [C.1881]; 38 Raleigh Street, Nottingham [C.1891]; 5 Maples Street, Bentinck Road Hyson Green [C.1901 & CWGC]. Fred's mother, Mary, died in 1926 aged 69 and his father, William Henry Smith, who latterly was a factory manager, died at Nottingham in 1939 aged 83. William had remarried after his wife's death (Elizabeth, died 1933); he was still living at 5 Maples Street, Bentinck Road, at the time of his death.

He enlisted at Nottingham; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Inscription on family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Mary, the dear wife of WH Smith, born October 19th 1856, passed away March 16th 1926. Also of Fred Cyril (Northumberland Fusiliers), son of the above, killed in France April 29th 1917, aged 31 years. Reunited. Also of Elizabeth, dear wife of the above WH Smith, passed away march 20th 1933 aged 71 years. Also of the above William Henry Smith, who died February 9th 1939 aged 83 years'. Probate: SMITH William Henry of 5 Maples-street Bentinck Road Nottingham died 9 February 1939 Probate Nottingham 13 April to William Foster solicitor and Ernest Sallis surgical hosiery manufacturer.
