Alfred Squires (junior) was born in 1885 at Grantham and was the son of the late Alfred Squires (senior) a boiler maker and Ann Squires née Thompson of Grantham. Alfred (junior) resided at 8 Mount Pleasant, Newark. His father Alfred (senior) was born in Newark in 1852 , he died in 1896 and his mother Ann Thompson was born in 1859 at Swinderby and died in 1893, they were married in 1876 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Walter b1877, Eliza Ellen b1879, Albert b1882, Harriet b1884, Alfred b1885 and James b1889. Following the death of their parents the children were taken in by various relatives in the 1901 census Alfred 15 yrs of age is living with his widowed grandmother 67 yrs Ann Thompson who is a beer house keeper at the Portland Arms, Portland Street, Newark, he is living at the address with his brother Albert 19 yrs and sister Harriett 17 yrs.

2nd Bn Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Private Alfred Squires enlisted at Newark, he served with the 2nd battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He was killed in action on 29th November 1914 and is buried at Aubers Ridge British Cemetery, Aubers, Nord, France.
