He was the husband of Mary (née Kelly) Meakin and the father of Archer, William and Henriette Meakin. In 1911 they lived at 7, Imperial Road, Beeston, Nottingham.
Formerly a cab man, he joined the Midland Railway Police as a constable on 2nd August 1907 and was stationed at Nottingham.

He volunteered at the beginning of the war and was initially recruited to the 17th Lancers as a Trooper on 7 September 1914, later transferring to the Royal Irish Rifles. He is buried in the Berks Cemetery Extension Belgium Grave Reference: l.K.9
