Wilfred Stirland was born in 1895 at Eastwood and was the son of Sarah Stirland of Eastwood. His mother Sarah Ann was born in 1874 at Eastwood, she married her husband George Henry Saxton in 1903 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They went on to have a futher 3 children, William Saxton b1905. Gladys May Saxton b1907 and Lucy Hannah Saxton b1910 In the 1911 census the family are living at Bridge Terrace, Eastwood and are shown as George Saxton 30 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann Saxton and their child, Wilfred Saxton (appear to have adopted his step fathers name in the census) 16 yrs and a wire winder, William Saxton 6yrs Gladys May Saxton 4yrs and Lucy Hannah Saxton 2 months old. George has declared on the census that they have been married for 8 yrs and had 4 children. At the time of Wilfred's death his family was living at 57 Castle Street Hill Top Eastwood Nottinghamshire.
He was a wire winder in the 1911 census.

22nd Bn (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers
Private Wilfred Stirland enlisted at Derby in March 1916. he served with the 22nd battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was wounded in the thigh by shrapnel and hospitalised in Dorset. He was killed in action on 17th October 1917 by shell fire (The circumstances of his death are described in 2nd Lt Nicholson's letter shown below.) having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial,
