Joseph was married to Alice Corthorn, née Wardle, who was born in 1883 in Lenton, Nottingham. They married at Lenton Church on January 2, 1904. They had four children, George William, born November 30, 1904, Joseph, born June 3, 1907, Thomas Edward, born July 22, 1910 and Edith Elizabeth, born February 14, 1913. The family had lived at 13 Lower Regent Street, Beeston, Nottingham before moving to 3 Chancery Place, Broad Marsh, Nottingham.
He worked as an iron fitter.

14th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Corthorn had served in the Sherwood Foresters and had been in the Army Reserve. He had also taken part in the South African War. As a result he attested on November 2, 1914 at Nottingham and on November 13th he was posted to 14th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He was appointed paid lance sergeant on November 27th, and promoted to full sergeant on December 10, 1914. The battalion was sent to Egypt and on February22, 1915 he was promoted to acting quartermaster sergeant at the Base Headquarters Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Alexandria. Unfortunately, he contracted dysentery and died at 17th General Hospital on September 5, 1915. He was buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military & War Memorial Cemetery.
