John Lawton was born in 1871 at Worksop and worked as a canal bargeman before joining Nottingham Corporation was a paver. His wife was Priscilla Lawton, who was born in 1871 in Nottingham, of 43, Malt Mill Lane, Canal St., Nottingham, and worked as a lace hand. They had six children; John, born in 1894 at Oldcotes, Notts., and working as a lace dresser, George Thomas Pretoria, born in 1900, Tom, born in 1903, Herbert, born in 1906, William, born in 1908 and Harry, born in July 1910. Art from John, all the children were born in Nottingham. The family moved from 1 Lewis Square, Radcliffe Street, Nottingham to 43 Malt Mill Lane, Canal Street, Nottingham.
Pte. Lawton worked as a bargeman and then a pavier.

311th Protection Coy Royal Defence Corps
John Lawton was far too old to serve on the front line, but he wanted to make a contribution. He therefore joined the Royal Defence Corps, and part of the Protection Company guarded barracks and headquarters. He died, aged 50 years, on 22/01/1919 and was buried in the General Cemetery, Nottingham.
