George Beastall was born in 1882 at Sutton in Ashfield and was the son of Robert a coal miner and Ann Beastall née Bean of Newark Road, Sutton in Ashfield. His father Robert was born in 1860 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Ann Beam was born in 1862 also in Sutton, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood their surviving children all born in Sutton in Ashfield were, George b1882, Mary b1884, Thomas b1887, Joseph b1891 William b1893 and Alice b1906. George married his wife Lily Downes (born 11th May 1887 at Goole) in 1905 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 5 Cobden Terrace, Hyson Green, Nottingham and had the following children, Gladys Olive born 26th June 1907 and Edith born 5th January 1912. In the 1911 census George is living at 26 Bridge Street, Sutton in Ashfield they are shown as George 29 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Lily 24 yrs and their child Gladys Olive 3 yrs of age, In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Newark Road, Sutton in Ashfield and are shown as Robert 50 yrs a coal miner stallman, he is living with his wife Ann 49 yrs and their children, Thomas 24 yrs a coal miner stallman, William 18 yrs a colliery labourer and Alice 5 yrs of age. Following George's death his widow Lily was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 8 pence a week which commenced on 12th May 1919

11th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Lance Sergeant George Beastall enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hyson Green, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Landing in France 23rd September 1915, he was killed in action on 9th October 1918 and is buried Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois, France. Plot 3. Row D. Grave 8/9
