He was the son of Rev Alexander and Mary Mann of 26 Waterloo Road, Nottingham (obituary). His father had been the minister of Oban Congregational church from 1891 until 1896 when he moved to Nottingham as minister of Addison Street Congregational Church. At the time of the 1911 census, Alexander (50) and his wife, Annie Stewart (50), were living at 24 Forest Road West with their children; Alister John (19), James Stewart (16), WR Maurice (13) and Margaret I V (11). At the time of Alister's death in 1915 their address is given as 26 Waterloo Road, Nottingham. Rev Mann died in January 1944 at the home of his daughter, Dr DJ Mann, who lived on Wellington Circus. Alister's brother, James Stewart, was educated at Nottingham High School and at Edinburgh University and was a doctor, serving as a captain in the RAMC in Salonika; he died on 19 October 1959. His other brother, WF Maurice, also served.
At the time of the 1911 census Alister was a student and part-time warehouse assistant.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Alister John Mann, served with the 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died after being accidentally shot by a comrade on 15th September 1915. Buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery (grave ref lll.A.27A).
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 24 September 1915: 'Died of wounds September 15th Pte Alistair John Mann, 10th Sherwood Foresters, son of Rev Alexander and Mary(?) Mann, 26 Waterloo Road, Nottingham, aged 23 years.' Article published 1st October 1915 in the Nottingham Dailey Express :- “Private ALISTER JOHN MANN, of the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, son of the Rev.
