He was the son of Samuel and Mary Ann Cotton of Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. He was the husband of Ruth Lavinia (née Gregory) Cotton and the father of Samuel, Florrie EM and Mary E Cotton. In 1911 they lived at 42 Carsic Terrace Carsic Lane Sutton in Ashfield.
