John Harris Oates was born in 1898 at New Bagthorpe and was the son of John a coal miner loader and Elizabeth Oates née Harris of Mansfield Road, New Bagthorpe, Jacksdale. His father John was born in 1867 at Underwood and his mother Elizabeth Harris was born in 1871 also at Underwood, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded at the Basford Registration district. They went on to have 10 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Ada b1893, Ethel b1895, Sybil b1896, John Harris b1898, Helen b1901, Emma b1907, and Norman b1910 all were born at Bagthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at New Bagthorpe, Jacksdale and were shown as John 44 yrs a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their children Sybil 15 yrs working at home, John 12 yrs a scholar, Helen 10 yrs a scholar, Emma 4 yrs and Norman 10 months old.
Oates worked as a miner at Underwood Colliery. He was a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher at St Michael's Church Underwood Nottinghamshire.

7th Bn Leicestershire Regiment
Private John Harris Oates enlisted at Nottingham on 14th May 1918 , he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He arrived in France on 10th September 1918 and was killed four weeks later on October 8th. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial, France.
