Fred Cawley was born in 1897 he was the son of Walter a house painter and Emma Cawley née Copp and the brother of Harry and Lilian Cawley. Both Walter and Emma Copp were born in 1868 at Axminster in Devon he died on 17th April 1933 aged 65 yrs she died 19th February 1939 aged 71 yrs, they were married in 1893 at Axminster, they had 3 children. In 1911 the family lived at 102 Glapton Road Meadows Nottingham. Walter 43 yrs is a house painter, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their 3 children, Harry 17 yrs a french polisher, Lilian 15 yrs a hosiery mender and Frederick 14 yrs an errand boy all the children were born in Nottingham.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Fred Cawley enlisted at Nottingham, he went to France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Commemorated : Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A
Family grave, Nottingham Southern Cemetery, Wilford Hill: 'In remembrance of my dear husband Walter Cawley, died 17th April 1933 aged 65 years. Also Fred, son of the above, killed in action 1916. Also Emma Crawley, wife of the above died 19th February 1939 aged 71 years. Reunited.'
