Joseph Ernest Smith was born in 1893 at Southwell and was the son of William a general labourer and Elizabeth Smith née Blanchard of Pollard's Lane Southwell Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1859 at Harby, Lincolnshire and his mother Elizabeth Blanchard was born in 1861 at Easton, Grantham, they were married in 1879 in Lincolnshire and went on to have 13 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were George Walter b1882 Flintham, Mabel Everline b1884 Laceby, Charles b1885 Flintham, Herbert b1887,the remaining children were all born in Southwell and were Walter Henry b1892 Joseph Ernest b1893, Charlotte Annie b1895, Arthur Leslie b1898, Dorthy Blanchard b1900, Albert Blanchard b1903,Thomas Harold b1909 and Leonard Smith b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at Pollards Lane, Southwell and are shown as William 52 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Walter Henry 19 yrs a threader in a lace factory, Joseph Ernest a butchers assistant, Charlotte Annie 16 yrs a home help, Arthur Leslie 13 yrs a scholar, Dorothy Blanchard 11 yrs a scholar, Albert Blanchard 8 yrs a scholar, Thomas Harold 7 yrs a scholar, and Leonard 3 yrs.
He was butcher's assistant.

1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Joseph Ernest Smith enlisted at Southwell and served in the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 3rd October 1918 and is buried at Joncourt East British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
