He was born in London and baptised on 17 May 1896 at Peckham St Luke. He was the son of Edwin and Ruth Gardner who were married in the parish of All Saints Poplar in the borough of Tower Hamlets, on 9 October 1881. They had five children; Ruth, William, Alice, Edwin and Daniel. At the time of the 1891 Census Edwin and Ruth were living at 7 George Street, Camberwell, with their four children Ruth (8), William (6), Alice (4) and Edwin (5 months). Also in the household was Emma Gardner (42), a laundress, who was probably Edwin's sister. They were still at the same address ten years later at the time of the 1901 Census with their five children Ruth, William, Alice, Edwin and Daniel (5). Daniel's mother, Ruth Martha Gardner died in 1901 (Jan/Feb/Mar), age 51. By 1911 his father was living at 3 Kenneth Road, Fulham, London, with three of his children, William, Alice and Daniel.
He attended Cator Street School, Southwark, from 28 August 1905. He was a druggist's assistant in 1911.

He enlisted in Fulham, residence Manchester.

12th Bn. He is buried in Philosophe British Cemetery Mazingarbe (grave ref. I L32). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
His sisters, Alice Gardner and Mrs Ruth Seman were his legatees.
