Bernard Parkins was born on 26th December 1895 at Gunthorpe, he was baptised on 12th April 1896 at St Mary's Church, Lowdham and was the son of John Henry a frame work knitter and Margaret Parkins née Wildbore of Gunthorpe. His father John Henry was born in 1869 at Gunthorpe and his mother Margaret Wildbore was born in 1870 at Epperstone, they were married on 23rd January 1888 at St Mary's church Lowdham, they went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Stella b1890, Nora b1893, Bernard b1895, Charles b1905 and Lewis b1908 all were born at Gunthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire and are shown as John Henry 42 yrs a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Margaret 41 yrs a dress maker and their children, Stella 21 yrs no occupation listed, Nora 18 yrs no occupation listed, Bernard 15 yrs a shop assistant, Charles 6 yrs and Lewis 3 yrs of age.
He was a shop assistant in the 1911 census.

100th Bn Machine Gun Corps
Private Bernard Parkins enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 2302 in the South Notts Hussars. He was serving with the 100th battalion Machine Corps when he died of wounds on 17th October 1918. He is buried at Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. 1.F.39
