Lance Corporal Herbert Taylor enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th August 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 14th August 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Resided with mother at 1 Eldon Place, Newark and grandson of the late Mr James Taylor, formerly of Norwell Woodhouse. He joined the 8th Sherwood Foresters in October 1914 and after 18 months home defence, volunteered for foreign service, proceeding to France in June 1916. He saw just over a year of active service and was looking forward to leave when posted missing on August 4th, 1917. Declared dead in August 1918. Prior to the war he was employed at Mr Tryner Lynn, Stodman Street.
