William was the son of William Joseph and Georgiana Pursglove and the brother of Beatrice and Sarah Evelyn. In 1901 William and Georgiana were living at Queen Street, South Normanton, with their two eldest children, William (3) and Beatrice (7 months). Ten years later in 1911 they were living at 8 Howard Street Sutton in Ashfield; William and Beatrice now had a sister, Sarah Evelyn (7). At the time of William's death the family home was still at 8 Howard Street.

SS Barrymore Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
SS Barrowmore, 3832 GRT, built in 1911 for Lochmore SS Co Liverpool (later owned by Johnston Line Ltd with Furness Withy & Co Ltd). Barrowmore was torpedoed and sunk by U-94 (Lt Alfred Saalwachter) 53 miles NW of Bishop Rock while on passage from Huelva to Port Talbot with a cargo of copper ore. 25 men were lost including the Master and three from the RN/RNVR. William's body was not recovered for burial and he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
